Press Release: More Storms Anticipated as Power Outages Strike Michigan
Detroit, MI – Following a night of severe thunderstorms, many residents across Michigan are waking up to widespread power outages, particularly in west Michigan, where strong winds and severe weather wreaked havoc. The storms that rolled in late Thursday prompted severe thunderstorm warnings and even tornado alerts in certain regions. As of Friday morning, no confirmed tornado touchdowns have been reported, although significant wind damage has been noted.
Consumers Energy, which serves a large portion of west and mid-Michigan, reported over 187,353 customers without power as of 6:43 a.m. Friday. Areas near Lake Michigan experienced damaging winds reaching up to 70 mph, along with reports of tornado sightings and hail. “We recognize that many communities will be waking up to the impact of this tremendous storm system,” said Chris Wisniewski of Consumers Energy, pledging to marshal all resources for a swift recovery.
In southeast Michigan, DTE Energy reported 9,384 customers without power, while the Lansing Board of Water and Light noted that 21,862 residents are affected as well. Residents are urged to take precautions if encountering downed power lines, including staying at least 20 feet away and reporting emergencies to 911.
Weather forecasts indicate another warm day with the potential for more storms later on Friday. Officials encourage everyone to remain vigilant as further severe weather may impact the region.
