NWS Reports 3 Confirmed Tornado Touchdowns in Southeast Michigan Due to Overnight Severe Storms

Three Tornadoes Confirmed in Southeast Michigan Following Severe Storms

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN – Three tornadoes were confirmed in Southeast Michigan overnight as severe thunderstorms swept through the region, prompting multiple tornado warnings. The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that the most powerful tornado, rated EF-1, touched down in Gregory, while two EF-0 tornadoes were recorded in St. Charles and Atlas.

The Gregory tornado struck near Hickory Ridge Dairy Farm around 12:03 a.m., with estimated peak winds of 90 mph. It traveled a path of 1.6 miles and was 230 yards wide. Meanwhile, the St. Charles tornado hit shortly after at 12:05 a.m., near Dempsey Road and Walnut Street, with peak winds of 85 mph, a similar path length of 1.6 miles, and a width of 250 yards. The Atlas tornado, occurring at 12:35 a.m., had peak winds of 75 mph, covering a path of 1.2 miles and reaching a width of 100 yards.

The NWS noted that the thunderstorms that triggered these tornadoes brought widespread straight-line wind damage across the region. “Several circulations developed within this line of storms as it crossed into Southeast Michigan after midnight,” an NWS Detroit X account reported.

In total, meteorologists recorded an impressive 1,400 lightning strikes within a 30-minute period, highlighting the intensity of the storm system. “The storms were massive, stretching 50 miles from end to end,” said FOX 2 meteorologist Derek Kevra. As warm and cold air masses collide, this serves as a stark reminder that Michigan is in the midst of severe weather season.
