Charming Brick Lighthouse Overlooking Lake Michigan to Launch Sesquicentennial Season

White River Light Station Celebrates 150th Anniversary with Special Events

WHITEHALL, MI – The historic White River Light Station is set to kick off its sesquicentennial season this May, marking 150 years of maritime history. Built in 1875, the lighthouse opens for tours on May 22, welcoming visitors with tower climbs and an onsite museum, as announced by the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association.

Nestled on a picturesque green lawn with stunning views of Lake Michigan, the lighthouse has become a cherished local landmark. This season, it will operate daily from May 22 through September 7, with specific hours varying by day. Starting September 11, it will be open Thursday to Sunday through October 19.

Decommissioned in 1960, the White River Light Station transformed into a museum in 1970, celebrating the region’s rich nautical heritage. Highlighting the anniversary will be a special event on June 21, featuring music, food, and activities, alongside a tribute from the state of Michigan.

Additionally, the lighthouse will host a Kids’ Program series throughout the summer—scheduled for June 25, July 9, August 13, September 13, and October 4—designed for children in grades one through four, promoting learning about maritime and lighthouse history.

Visitors will have the chance to climb the 38-foot tower for picturesque views of Lake Michigan, with climbing fees set at $8 for adults and $5 for students (17 and under). Active military and veterans can climb for free, although children must meet height requirements to ascend.

As it celebrates this significant milestone, the White River Light Station continues to be a beacon of history and community spirit on the shores of Lake Michigan.
