Man Killed in Shootout with Michigan State Trooper During Traffic Stop in Detroit

DETROIT (WXYZ) — A man died following a violent altercation with a Michigan State Police trooper during a traffic stop in Detroit on Friday evening. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. near the Lodge Freeway and Wyoming Avenue.

According to authorities, the trooper was conducting a routine traffic stop when an altercation ensued with a 41-year-old suspect from Highland Park. During the confrontation, the suspect shot the trooper, who then returned fire, fatally wounding the assailant. The suspect was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.

The trooper was shot three times—twice in his protective vest and once in the shoulder. He was later taken to Sinai Grace Hospital in stable condition, with family members present at the hospital. Although his name has not been released, officials confirmed he has been with the department for about a year.

Michigan State Police Director Col. James F. Grady II praised the medical staff and the Detroit Police Department for their swift response in assisting the injured trooper. Grady emphasized the protective role of the trooper’s vest, stating, “Without those vests on, it’d be a totally different conversation.”

The incident is currently under investigation by the Detroit Police Department’s homicide task force, which includes detectives from both DPS and MSP. The motive for the altercation remains unclear, and a handgun was recovered from the scene. The area was closed off to traffic as the investigation continued.

This event marks a troubling pattern, as Director Grady highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement officers daily in their commitment to public safety.
