West Michigan Man Loses Life Trying to Save Girl in Indiana Creek

West Michigan Man Drowns While Rescuing Young Girl in Indiana Creek

MARSHALL, IN – A tragic incident unfolded last week when a 56-year-old man from West Michigan drowned while attempting to save a young girl struggling in the strong currents of Sugar Creek in Turkey Run State Park, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The victim, identified as Maximo Disla-Garcia of Wyoming, was reported missing on Friday, May 16, around 7:30 p.m.

Witnesses reported that Disla-Garcia bravely entered the water to assist the girl, who was in distress. Unfortunately, the powerful current overpowered him, pulling him underwater and preventing him from resurfacing. Remarkably, the girl managed to save herself without injury.

First responders, including Indiana Conservation Officers, quickly arrived at the scene, and Disla-Garcia’s body was recovered later that evening. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy confirmed the cause of death as accidental drowning.

The Indiana Conservation Officers were supported by local fire departments, including the Marshall, Bellmore, Montezuma, and Bloomingdale Fire Departments, as well as Parke County Emergency Medical Service during the recovery efforts.

Disla-Garcia’s heroic actions underscore the risks involved in attempting to rescue individuals in dangerous water conditions. Local officials remind visitors to exercise caution around swift currents and to prioritize personal safety in emergency situations.

As community members reflect on this profound loss, Disla-Garcia’s bravery and selflessness will be remembered. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of water and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines in recreational areas.
