House Republicans Push for Ban on Transgender Girls in K-12 Female Sports
In a polarizing move, House Republicans in Michigan have passed legislation banning transgender girls from competing in female K-12 sports, while allowing them to participate in co-ed and boys’ divisions. The bills, approved on May 22, also enable students to sue school districts if they claim harm due to violations of this policy.
State Rep. Jason Woolford, the bill’s sponsor, asserted that the restrictions are necessary for fair competition and to protect female athletes. He cited a UN report alleging that allowing transgender women to compete has led to diminished opportunities for cisgender female athletes, including lost scholarships and accolades. Currently, no transgender girls are actively competing in female high school sports in Michigan, although two did participate in the fall.
The legislation faced unanimous support from House Republicans, with only one Democrat, State Rep. Amos O’Neal, voting in favor of a related bill that rolls back protections based on birth-assigned sex. However, these bills are not expected to pass in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Opponents, including State Rep. Emily Dievendorf, Michigan’s first openly nonbinary lawmaker, criticized the bills as discriminatory, warning they could promote bullying and erode civil rights for all children. Dievendorf expressed concern that the debate undermines the spirit of teamwork and inclusivity inherent in sports.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) currently allows transgender girls to compete in female sports with waivers, though none were granted for the winter or spring seasons. Equality Michigan, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, condemned the bills, arguing they encourage discrimination and could lead to invasive gender inspections for all athletes.
The legislation raises significant questions about the future of inclusivity and equality in school sports amid an ongoing national debate.
