Michigan State University Nears Resolution in NCAA Investigation of Recruiting Violations
East Lansing, MI – Michigan State University (MSU) is on the brink of resolving an NCAA investigation concerning recruiting violations that occurred during the tenure of former football coach Mel Tucker. The investigation came to light following an NCAA notice of allegations sent to MSU on April 29, based on violations the university self-reported in August 2023.
Athletic department spokesperson Matt Larson confirmed that while the university is aware of the notice, they have not yet received the official document. The NCAA’s findings relate specifically to Tucker’s recruitment practices and may involve serious allegations, classified as either Level I or Level II infractions, the most severe categories under NCAA rules. Michigan State now has a 90-day window to respond formally to these allegations.
Compounding the issue is the recent departure of MSU’s athletic director, Alan Haller. In the interim, men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo and deputy AD Jennifer Smith will share leadership duties as co-interim athletic directors.
Tucker was fired in September 2023 under controversial circumstances following allegations of sexual harassment by activist Brenda Tracy, stemming from interactions linked to the football program. This NCAA investigation adds another layer to the complications surrounding Tucker’s tenure, during which the Spartans achieved a notable 20-14 record, including a Peach Bowl victory in 2021.
Following his dismissal, Tucker filed a lawsuit against Michigan State in July 2024, claiming wrongful termination and alleging violations of his constitutional rights related to the harassment claims.
As MSU navigates this challenging situation, the focus remains on addressing the NCAA’s findings and the future of its football program.
