Funding Pause Threatens Marine Patrols in Michigan
KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. – A funding pause may disrupt water patrol efforts across Michigan’s lakes and rivers, raising safety concerns as the summer boating season approaches. Sheriff Richard Fuller of Kalamazoo County emphasized the potential impact on the sheriff’s office Marine Division during a recent interview with News Channel 3.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is currently negotiating new terms with the U.S. Coast Guard, which provides financial resources for county marine operations. Fuller confirmed that while the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office intends to allocate remaining funds to support the Marine Division, those resources may be insufficient as demand rises.
"We’re going to try and figure out what kind of plan we need here in Kalamazoo to ensure we can provide as much service as possible," said Fuller, noting the department’s commitment to community education and safety enforcement on the water. The focus of marine patrols is to ensure boaters adhere to safety regulations rather than simply issuing tickets.
With nearly two decades of law enforcement experience, Fuller expressed optimism about a resolution, stating that he believes the situation will improve. "I have seen challenges like this occur in government before, and I trust that our officials in Lansing are working diligently to resolve it," he noted.
Despite the funding pause, Fuller reassured the public that the sheriff’s office remains dedicated to maintaining safety on Michigan’s waterways. "We wish everyone a happy, safe boating season," he said. "We will be out there, especially during peak times."
As of now, News Channel 3 has reached out to the Michigan DNR for further clarification but has yet to receive a response.
