Many individuals may receive direct messages from fake celebrity accounts shortly after commenting on posts, leading them to believe they are engaging with real stars.
“Unfortunately, there are people who fall for these obvious scams. It’s frightening how easily trust can be manipulated,” Nessel stated. She advises that individuals remain vigilant and skeptical, emphasizing that celebrities will not reach out for money or personal information through social media.
To protect oneself, authorities recommend assuming that any unsolicited message claiming to be from a celebrity is fraudulent. The urgency of this warning is underscored by the alarmingly high number of reports flooding in from Michigan residents.
“Never send money to someone you do not know. Always verify before engaging with someone on social media, especially if it raises any red flags,” Nessel advised.
