Whitmer and Other Leaders Condemn Trump’s Deployment of National Guard to Los Angeles

Michigan Leaders Denounce Trump’s National Guard Deployment amid Protests

In a strong response to President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles, Michigan’s Democratic leadership has voiced unified opposition, labeling the move an "alarming abuse of power." Governor Gretchen Whitmer, alongside 21 other Democratic governors, criticized the deployment as an infringement on state sovereignty. Attorney General Dana Nessel described it as an "affront" and urged peaceful protest, while Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson labeled the action a "tyrannical abuse of power" on social media.

The National Guard was deployed amid escalating protests in Los Angeles, prompted by reports of ICE raids. On June 6, the Los Angeles Police Department declared the protests an "unlawful assembly," leading to clashes and arrests. Trump’s action, which included sending 2,000 National Guard members, marks a rare federal military intervention without a state’s governor request—a practice dating back to the Civil Rights Movement in 1965.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom have condemned the deployment as an unnecessary provocation, with Newsom filing a lawsuit against Trump. Whitmer, Nessel, and Benson collectively argued that effective governance requires collaboration with state leaders rather than unilateral federal actions. Nessel emphasized the danger of hyperbolizing national crises for political leverage, suggesting that such actions undermine domestic rule and civil liberties.

Adding to the criticism, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin remarked on the implications for an apolitical military, asserting that local law enforcement had not requested military intervention, further questioning Trump’s motivations. Nessel pledged to challenge any illegal federalization of the National Guard in Michigan, urging citizens to protest lawfully while distancing the state from Trump’s provocative tactics.

As the situation unfolds, Michigan’s leaders remain vigilant against potential militarization in response to domestic unrest.
