Arab American Voters in Michigan React Strongly to New Travel Ban
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) — A new travel ban imposed by former President Donald Trump has stirred anger among Arab American voters in Michigan, particularly in the Dearborn area, which boasts one of the largest Arab populations in the U.S. The ban, resembling the controversial 2017 restrictions often dubbed the "Muslim ban," affects citizens from 12 countries, including Yemen.
Local activist Wali Altahif expressed disbelief over the ban’s impact, questioning the motivations behind targeting communities that showed support for Trump. The travel ban, aimed at protecting national security, has been described by critics as "selective discrimination." Many in the Yemeni community, which is largely affected by conflict in Yemen, feel betrayed, especially given their hope for peace that was promised during Trump’s previous administration.
Dearborn, home to a significant number of Arab Americans, witnessed an unusual shift in voting patterns during the last election, with Trump securing votes in a city traditionally Democratic-leaning. This shift was compounded by dissatisfaction with President Biden’s administration, particularly regarding its stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The new restrictions are inciting unease among many in the community, who worry about potential retaliation or detainment during travel. Civil rights lawyer Amir Makled noted that some citizens are opting not to travel despite having the legal right, fearing complications at borders.
As upcoming elections approach, candidates from both major parties are courting Arab and Muslim voters who may feel disillusioned and consider alternative options. With a critical U.S. Senate seat and the governor’s race on the horizon, the voting choices of this demographic could significantly influence political power in Michigan. Osama Siblani, publisher of the Arab American News, highlighted a growing appetite for independent candidates amid dissatisfaction with both parties.
