Michigan Officials React to Political Violence in Minnesota
Lansing, MI – Michigan officials expressed deep concern following the tragic shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses in what has been described as "politically motivated" violence. On Saturday, state representatives were targeted in Brooklyn Park, where former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed. Just miles away in Champlin, state Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were also shot.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the attacks, highlighting the alarming rise in political violence across the nation. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer took to social media, stating, "We must call out this violence, no matter who it’s aimed at or where it originates." She expressed her condolences for the Hortman family and wished for the speedy recovery of the Hoffman couple.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten shared her outrage, emphasizing that political violence poses a direct threat to American democracy and cannot be normalized. Colleague Rep. Haley Stevens echoed these sentiments, labeling the event a "horrific and deadly act of political violence."
In response to the shootings, President Trump confirmed that federal and local authorities are investigating, promising to hold those responsible accountable. The suspect, described to have posed as a police officer, remains unfound.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel reassured Michiganders, stating she is in contact with local law enforcement to monitor any potential threats stemming from the violence in Minnesota. Nessel confirmed, "At this time, my department is not aware of any emergent danger in our state related to these shootings," but emphasized the importance of vigilance to protect elected officials and citizens alike.
As the investigation continues, Michigan leaders remain united against the growing threat of political violence in America.
