No Beach Hazard Warning Issued in One-Third of Drownings on West Michigan Beaches

Title: Summer Safety Alerts: Drowning Risks on West Michigan Beaches

PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. — As summer approaches, it is crucial to recognize the potential dangers lurking on West Michigan’s beautiful beaches. Over the last five years, 22 individuals have drowned between South Haven and Muskegon during the summer season, highlighting the need for vigilant water safety practices, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project (GLSRP). A concerning trend is that more than one-third of these incidents occurred without a beach hazard statement from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids.

Dave Benjamin, executive director of GLSRP, emphasized that the NWS alerts do not specify conditions at individual beaches, which can lead to unpredictable situations. For instance, varying conditions at Holland State Park versus Grand Haven State Park can significantly affect swimmer safety. He stressed the importance of real-time monitoring of water conditions, stating, “You need eyes on the water.”

Statistically, the NWS has averaged 22 beach hazard statements each summer, yet the number of drownings fluctuates widely, with 2022 recording a high of eight fatalities, while 2023 saw no drownings so far. Park Township firefighter Cal Keuning underscored the inherent unpredictability of human behavior and the challenges that come with ensuring safety at the shore.

To combat these risks, Keuning’s team is proactively working on fostering a culture of water safety, urging beachgoers to remain informed and prepared for changing conditions. “All of us working together,” he stated, emphasizes the community’s commitment to safety as families prepare for days of fun in the sun.

As the warm days of summer draw near, local authorities recommend being cautious and vigilant to ensure a safe beach experience for everyone.
