WMU Students Achieve Milestone at Inaugural Venture Studio Pitch Night
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Sixteen undergraduate students from Western Michigan University (WMU) made history during the 2024-25 academic year, successfully securing patent-pending status for their innovative product ideas before graduation. This record accomplishment was celebrated at the recent pitch night event hosted by the Richmond Institute of Design and Innovation (RID+I) Venture Studio.
Dr. Remzi Seker, WMU’s Vice President for Research and Innovation, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "We’re advancing Experience-Driven Learning, allowing students to develop business plans and connect with investors." The Venture Studio challenges product design students to transform their concepts into viable products, giving them a unique advantage as they prepare for their future careers.
Students received mentorship on entrepreneurial skills, intellectual property, and market research while collaborating with industry professionals. Michael Seeley, an adjunct instructor and founder of Liminal Group, co-sponsored the event, highlighting its role in fostering a collaborative ecosystem for design-led entrepreneurship in Kalamazoo.
During the pitch night, participants presented their inventions to a panel of judges and community leaders. Anna Reinhardt’s moveable storage basket for wheelchair users won first place, while Jacob Meyer’s air-purifying lamp and Mallaigh Phelan’s allergen detection device secured second and third, respectively.
With nearly half of WMU’s 29 invention disclosures this year originating from the Venture Studio, the university aims to expand opportunities for innovation across various majors. David Johnson, Director of Technology and Innovation Advancement, noted, "We want WMU to stand out as a hub for innovators."
As these students step into the workforce, their patent-pending status will undoubtedly set them apart, showcasing their dedication to turning innovative ideas into reality. For more updates, visit WMU News online.
