Gov. Whitmer Unveils 140 New Housing Units in Hastings and Coldwater Redevelopment Projects
LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer today announced the initiation of two significant redevelopment projects in Hastings and Coldwater, set to create 140 new housing units and community spaces. Both endeavors will be supported by the bipartisan Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) program, generating an impressive total capital investment exceeding $34.8 million.
“With these new projects, we are advancing affordable housing and revitalizing our communities, enabling families to thrive in Michigan,” Whitmer stated, emphasizing the creation of good-paying jobs and the transformation of vacant properties. The governor believes these developments will foster vibrant downtown areas and enhance community offerings.
The RAP program has made a considerable impact since its 2022 launch, assisting 234 communities statewide. Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II expressed his commitment to continue investing in Michigan’s growth and development through this program.
In Hastings, a brownfield site will be transformed into a three-story building housing 135 rental units and a 15,080-square-foot community and arts center, thanks to a RAP grant of $921,510. This project will enhance the downtown area and support local businesses. Mayor David J. Tossava highlighted the significant benefits this project will bring to the community.
Meanwhile, in Coldwater, a historic building damaged in a 2020 fire will be redeveloped into a mixed-use space featuring five apartments and commercial areas. This initiative aims to bolster residential density and serve as a revitalization model for other buildings in the downtown district, backed by a RAP grant of $605,636.
Both projects reflect Michigan’s ongoing commitment to economic development and community revitalization, making strides to enhance the quality of life for residents.
