Brendan Herger Named 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Brendan Herger, a standout member of the University of Michigan men’s track and field team, has earned the prestigious title of 2025 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, as announced by the conference on June 18.
Herger’s impressive performance at the recent NCAA Outdoor Championships solidified his status as one of the top competitors in his field. He finished ninth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:47.88, making him the only freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championships in this event. Herger narrowly missed a podium finish, finishing just 0.15 seconds shy of third place and 0.60 seconds behind champion Nathan Green of Washington, which earned him second team All-America honors.
In addition to his NCAA success, the Northville, Mich. native made a strong showing at the Big Ten Championships, securing fifth place with a time of 3:54.21. Notably, he holds the No. 4 time in the 1,500-meter run in Michigan program history at 3:38.72. Herger also ranks tenth on the program’s performers list for the 800-meter run, clocking in at 1:47.96.
Herger’s recent achievement makes him the first Michigan athlete to receive the Big Ten Outdoor Freshman of the Year award since Nick Willis in 2003, highlighting a significant milestone in his promising collegiate career.
