Canton Celebrates Michigan’s Oldest Resident with Unique Potato Surprise
CANTON, Michigan (WXYZ) — Bonita Gibson, Michigan’s oldest resident at 114 years old, celebrated her birthday in style with a surprise visit from a 72-foot Big Idaho Potato at Waltonwood Carriage Park. This four-ton, fiberglass potato on wheels is part of the Idaho Potato Company’s national tour, bringing joy and smiles wherever it goes.
Gibson, who attributes her longevity to Idaho potatoes, was thrilled by the unexpected visit. “I was really surprised because it’s something I’ve never seen before,” said Charlotte, who joined her grandmother for the festivities. Gibson’s excitement was evident as she held her “spuddy buddy” plush toy, making the day even more special.
The Idaho Potato Company has been traveling to about 35 states for seven months each year, promoting the beloved vegetable. “It’s been to all 50 [states],” said Jena Garofalo, Brand Ambassador for the company. Gibson’s grandson, Scott Gibson, shared his delight about fulfilling his grandmother’s potato wish, as she and her husband grew Idaho potatoes for 35 years in Idaho Falls.
Gibson’s fondness for potatoes continues; her fridge is always stocked, and her preferred method of preparation is mashed. “She was making them forever,” Scott remarked, highlighting her culinary passion.
The celebration not only honored Gibson but also drew visitors from the community eager to meet her. “We think it’s just so amazing,” said Sara Boehm, who visited with her kids.
As a final touch, the Idaho Potato Company presented gifts from Idaho, ensuring the day was memorable for Michigan’s treasured centenarian. This marks the second big birthday surprise organized by Waltonwood Carriage Park, solidifying Gibson’s special place in the community.
